Recent months have seen a wave of pro-Palestinian protests across various U.S. college campuses, spurred by the conflict between Israel and Hamas which began with a Hamas attack on October 7 that killed around 1,200 people. The situation escalated with Israel's invasion of Gaza, claiming the lives of over 34,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians. These events have ignited protests at universities including Yale, Columbia, NYU, MIT, and more, urging these institutions to divest from companies with ties to Israel.

At Yale University, police arrested 45 protesters for trespassing after they set up camp and refused to leave. Similar protests and subsequent arrests occurred at Columbia University, where over 100 students were taken into custody after they refused to comply with campus safety rules, prompting the university to switch to remote classes temporarily. NYU saw violent protests where bottles were thrown at police officers, resulting in 133 arrests. These campuses, along with others like the University of Michigan and California State Polytechnic University, witnessed significant disruptions, and some schools have had to increase security measures.

In response to these protests, campus administrations have taken decisive actions to maintain order and safety. Statements from universities like Columbia have expressed commitment to freedom of expression but emphasize that safety and academic functions cannot be compromised. Some campuses have implemented measures to control protests strictly, with actions including issuing warnings, making arrests, and enforcing campus protocols against disruptive behaviors. This has led to a broader discourse on academic freedom, governance, and the rights of students to protest.

The American Association of University Professors at Columbia has even moved to submit a 'Resolution of Censure' against Columbia's President over her handling of the protests. This situation highlights the complex intersection of campus policy, student activism, and the broader geopolitical conflicts that ignite such protests. As these events continue to develop, the balance between maintaining safety and respecting the rights of students to express their viewpoints remains a challenging issue for these institutions.
